Container Printing Advice

A general disclaimer is necessary when discussing the topic of printing on round objects. It is critical for you to pre-test to ensure reasonable ink-to-container compatibility. There are many different types of “plastics” and there are usually inconsistencies between suppliers based on methods of manufacturing, time in storage and many other factors.

Lawson does not guarantee any ink product used for container printing and it is the customer's responsibility to test and certify any product they choose to use. No returns are allowed and no free samples are available.

1. It is recommended that all containers (i.e. bottles, mugs, etc.) be hand-washed. Most container inks are not dishwater safe.

2. Many “plastic” bottles need to be Flame Treated to ensure good ink adhesion.

3. Remember, you will need a strong press wash, like Lawson’s Clog-Buster to help keep your screen “open” during the printing process, and to clean-up. Lawson’s PW-485 or PW-305 or even our C-7 may be used for screen wash-up at the conclusion of your print run.

4. Use a strong solvent-resistant emulsion like Ulano’s FX-88 SR or 569 and make sure your screen is thoroughly exposed.

5. General mesh counts used for container printing are from 230 – 305.

6. Frequently specialized fixtures are required to successfully print. Lawson can custom manufacture these fixtures based on your exact container. Prices generally range from $250 - $500 per/fixture. For “squeeze-type” bottles, a specialized Air-Inflation Attachment is necessary ($495.00).

7. For mugs with a handle, a special “2-sided” screen is required (est. cost = $75).
